Meanwhile-

We've been extremely busy resurrecting this entire website, so we thought we'd just collate everything we've been hard at work with here!

So, specially for our most patronizing customers, here are some housekeeping matters worth taking a look at:

1. Mailing List: This has caused us so many sleepless nights. We've been trying to get a good host for mailing lists, but so far we've only found Notify.com and they aren't exactly the most reliable hosts around, seeing as they have failed to send us our one week overdue verification emails.

Long story short, we've decided to take things into our own hands, so until we find a suitable mailing list host, we would like to invite anyone who's interested in receiving first hand updates on The Red Jewel's newest releases to send us their email addresses.

2. Irregularity of website updates: Because school's about to start in exactly a week's time for us, you can expect The Red Jewel to be pretty much in hibernation for a few more months till the December holidays. Of course, do keep checking as we might occassionally update it. Once again, it would prove extremely beneficial if you joined our Mailing List so that once we come back to life, emails will be sent all around!

3. Advertising of The Red Jewel: Just a friendly reminder that where it says "Like What You're Seeing? Then Help Spread The Word!" up at the top of the navigational column on the left, customers are most heartily invited to paste the html into their own blogs/sites to help spread the sparkly word of The Red Jewel! We would be more than honoured if you did :)

What are Japanese pearls?

Many people are asking about the difference between the pearls that we are cultivating in our pearl farm and Japanese pearls, so we would like to spend some time to talk about Japanese pearls today.

Most of the Japanese freshwater pearls are cultivated in China these days because of their pollution problem. Both freshwater pearls and are Akoya pearls are loosely called by laymen as Japanese pearls in the world of fashion and pearl jewellery. However, Akoya means Marine water in Japanese language. Japanese Akoya pearls are well known for their thick nacre and amazing luster. They have classic quality and grace.

Japanese Akoya pearls are harvested from small oysters Pincada fucata ; it is a small oyster have average size 6 to 7 cm. Best time to harvest these Akoya pearls are the hottest and coldest time of year, in this time period oysters are dormant. Pearls harvested in some other time of year have thin nacre and dull luster.

Kokichi Mikimoto a visionary from Japan invented a technique for culturing Akoya pearls. He also patented technique of culturing pearls. These pearls were primarily cultivated in sea water off the coastal area of Japan. To form beautiful Akoya pearl, small bead of mantle tissue is inserted inside the oyster and then those oysters are left to grow in Sea water or fresh water. Oyster then secretes layers of thick nacre over that irritant which results into formation of high quality, lustrous pearl.

Natural color of pearl is completely dependent upon the specie and climatic conditions of water. In 3-5 years, pearl grows completely into nice quality pearl with thick nacre. Growth is constantly monitored during growth period to get good harvest. Bead inserted in Akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii) is very small for formation of perfect Akoya pearl. Akoya oyster very rarely produces more than one pearl.

Because of the technological improvements, China pearls is catching on. Nowdays' freshwater pearls can marvel the same quality as the Akoya pearls. They also come in white and cream color with natural overtones like pink, blue, green etc. These pearls also have very high luster and usually they have a perfect round shape. Since they are nearly round they are best choice for necklace, earrings and bracelet. 40 to 50 Akoya pearls make a standard pearl necklace, which very common and popular among women.

Pearl Color

Pearl comes in wide array of colors from White to Black; you can have pearl of any shade in between white to black. Pearl color is not due to single factor, three factors are responsible for color of a pearl. Body color, Overtones and Orient are the three factors.

Body color is the prominent main color. It depends upon the type of oyster which produces it. For example- black lipped oyster produces black colored pearls. Body color may be anything from white, silver, golden, green, blue or as said earlier Black.

Overtones: Color that appears on top of pearl’s body color is called as Overtone. These overtone somewhat alters body color of pearl, It also add depth and glow to pearls natural color. Usually white pearls have rose pink overtone. It is not necessary that every pearl should have an overtone some pearls does not have overtone at all.

Orient: Orient is usually referred to shimmering iridescence or you can call it “play of color”. It can be a like rainbow or just subtle combination of colors like pink, green, silver and green. These caused by the way in which light is reflected through various thin layers of nacre.

Price of pearl usually does not depend upon color. But presence of overtone color and iridescence makes pearl more valuable. You can choose color that best suited to you.

Always remember few things while buying colored pearls. Always judge them against non – reflective white background, never judge pearls on black background. If possible compare pearl color in different lighting conditions like day light, fluorescent etc. If you are looking for matching pearls then it is better to take those previously bought pearls with you. Consider uniformity of colors. Many pearls are artificially colored by treatments like dying or irradiation. These treated pearls can be easily spot by looking for concentrations of color near the drilled hole.

These pearls are usually produced in China. Freshwater pearls are more affordable than that of saltwater pearls. Since freshwater pearls have different colors and shapes they have different grading system. Freshwater pearls are most common baroque since these pearls are mantle tissue nucleated instead of bead nucleus.

Baroque pearls are pearls with no definite shape. They are simply oddballs. They have endless irregular shape. Due this irregular shape they are least valuable of all pearl shapes. Though they are irregular in shape they have high luster.

A baroque pearl differs from freshwater pearls to a large extent. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are most expensive pearls. These pearls are produced by Pinctada margaritifera which is a Black lipped oyster and Pinctada maxima which is a white lipped oyster.

While cultivating freshwater pearls shell bead is not inserted, instead a shell bead mantle piece is inserted. Interestingly after the first harvest, mussel can spontaneously grow pearls a second time. So their nacre is very thick. A pearl with evenly high luster is considered to be high quality. Blemishes like pits, discoloration, cavities and wrinkles decrease value of freshwater pearls.

All Tahitian pearls are usually larger than 9mm. If pearl with diameter less than 9mm is marked as Tahitian pearl then it is probably fake colored.

Observe the drilled hole of pearl if nucleus is dark and nacre inside is white then pearl is definitely dyed. Also dyed pearls have dye concentrating around the drill hole or some dye spots on pearl surface.

If pearl color is without any natural overtone then it is dyed. Naturally produced pearls can not have the same color, so if pearls from a strand or jewelry have exact same color then they are dyed pearls.

Since pearls are obtained from shells there is possibility of some organic residues on the surface. To remove these organic residues Buffing is done.

To remove blemishes present on surface of pearls, Polishing is done. This process increases luster of pearls by removing some surface blemishes. There is one more process to increase luster of pearls, which is known as Coating of pearls. In this process artificial layer of substance is spread over the whole surface area of pearls or part of surface of pearls. Sometimes oiling is done to improve luster. There is no need of coating on high quality pearls as they naturally have very high luster.

If harvested pearl is partially hollow or its nucleus is somewhat loose then these void are filled with an epoxy substance. This will make pearl solid and will increase durability of pearl. This filling can be detected with help of X-rays.

Irradiation technique is used to enhance the natural color of pearl. This process can be used along with dyeing for light colored pearls. Usually gamma rays are bombarded on light colored pearls, after this treatment irradiated pearls will have iridescent bluish or greenish gray color.
