Genuine black Tahitian pearls

Tahitian pearls are most beautiful pearls among all pearls. These are most desired and cherished gems on earth. Tahitian pearls are sometimes also referred as South Sea pearls. Tahitian pearls are mainly grown in sea water of French Polynesia but these oysters are also found in Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Philippines, New Caledonia, Panama and Gulf of Mexico. It is observed that only 30 percent of the oyster cultured produce pearls.

These Tahitian pearls have color range from shimmering dark black to grey, green or blue with natural overtones. These pearls have some special metallic sheen. Tahitian pearls are generally 8-16mm in size. Chances of finding perfectly round Tahitian pearl are very rare.

Many times to replicate these precious Tahitian pearls, they are dyed or treated to appear all black. To identify between real and treated pearls take simple tests like; price test if price of Tahitian pearls are unbelievably low without any special reason then these pearls could be treated pearls. Tahitian pearls are more costly than long strand of cultured saltwater pearls of the same quality.

All Tahitian pearls are usually larger than 9mm. If pearl with diameter less than 9mm is marked as Tahitian pearl then it is probably fake colored.

Observe the drilled hole of pearl if nucleus is dark and nacre inside is white then pearl is definitely dyed. Also dyed pearls have dye concentrating around the drill hole or some dye spots on pearl surface.

If pearl color is without any natural overtone then it is dyed. Naturally produced pearls can not have the same color, so if pearls from a strand or jewelry have exact same color then they are dyed pearls.

While examining under magnifying glass if you observe strong color in and around blemishes than rest of pearl then that pearl is dyed.
