Beginners guide to beading

Beading is not a difficult task, in fact you can develop more ideas and enhance your creativity by doing it yourself at home. To start with beading, first you have to collect the pearls and the beads that you have to use while making the necklace. You have a wide variety of choices available for you to make an optimized selection.

After choosing the pearls and the beads, you will require a string to keep them designed together. You can use a thread, plastic line or a wire for this purpose. Beading wire would be the best option as it has more longevity as compared to the other materials.

Then you will need a clasp to fasten your necklace and hold it tightly and firmly in its place. There are beautiful large clasps available that are especially suitable if you are making a bracelet or you want to use the clasp as a centerpiece. The Lobster claw clasps are very popular among the beaders. These clasps are available at a reasonable rate and at the same time they can be fastened easily. They look wonderful with the turquoise beads, whether you are making a bracelet or a necklace out of it.

You will be also required to buy the simple metal rings or the jump rings that can be hooked separately to the lobster claw hooks. Use the crimp beads in the place of knots. Wherever you are using knots in the necklace or the bracelet, you can slip in a crimp bead there and then squeeze it with the help of the pliers. This will cover the knots and add to the beauty and finishing of your jewelry.

This was the basic guide for beading to help you start with. Once you get started, you will yourself invent novel and unique ideas to make your jewelry more attractive, more fabulous and more long lasting.

Formation of pearls

Pearl, one of the extra-ordinary and a beautiful gem stone is loved by all the women. It beautifies them on any occasion or ceremony. So, you will also be surely interested to know how real pearls are made. Let us see in brief, the formation of the pearls.

Pearl is found inside a living animal, an oyster. The pearl is formed due to a biological process- the oyster’s style of preventing himself from the foreign substances. The formation of a natural pearl is accidental. That means, when an accidental intruder enters the shell of a mollusk, the natural pearl is formed. To defend itself, it forms a layer of substances around itself and ultimately forms like the skin of a onion around the particle. These layers are semi-opaque that contains calcium carbonate and it makes up the pearl. Generally, the shape of the natural pearls is different from one another. This is so because the formation of the pearls entirely depends upon the shape of the piece that is coated by nature. Nowadays, it is very rare as well as expensive.

Hence, man has developed a process for imitating the process of the formation of natural pearls. This process is termed as cultured pearls. Generally these cultured pearls are available in sized like millimeters. The cultured pearls, similarly like the natural pearls grow and develop in the mollusk. The only difference is in natural pearls, the process goes on naturally; whereas in the cultured pearls the growth takes place with the human intervention.

The human beings then open the shells carefully and then insert different shapes of beads into it. After a due course of time, the beads get coated with nacre. This coating makes the pearl glow and shine inside the shell. Thus, we get to see the beautiful, shiny pearl.

Grade AAA- the pearls falling under this category are generally round in shape having excellent bluster. The surface area is very clean without any significant visible markings or imperfections. These are the pearls of high quality having high luster that can also be purchased on loose strands.

Grade AAAA- the main difference between the grade AAA and grade AAAA is in its roundness. This is the highest grade for the freshwater pearls and is very rare. How to care for your pearls

Pearl is one of the precious jewelry and a very delicate organic gem made of a natural product, calcium carbonate. Thus, it has to be treated in the same way. Pearls also get dusted and dirty unlike the other jewelries, so it is necessary to clean them periodically to prevent them from damaging.

The primary rule for caring for your pearl jewelry is accepting the golden rule of wearing it after you finish your grooming. Wear the pearl jewelry after applying your perfumes, hair sprays and make-up. Never spray the perfume on the neck area or apply powder by wearing the pearls. Also it is better to avoid touching the pearls after you have just applied your lotions or creams.

Make it a habit to remove the pearls before cleaning your face and neck with cleansers or face wash. When the pearls are removed clean and wipe them softly using a damp cloth. Polish the pearls occasionally using a silk cloth to improve and intensify its luster and shine. Never keep the pearls lying on your dressing table in the buffer, but make it a habit to keep them immediately back to their original containers.

You can get the pearls cleaned either from the jeweler or do it yourself at home if they get dirty. At home you can clean them by a liquid solution of mild soap and water. Rinse it in the solution carefully and then clean it with a soft cloth. After washing them, lay them flat on a moist cloth to dry. Allow it dry thoroughly and never wear it when its string is wet. This is so because the wet strings stretch and it attracts more dirt that is very difficult to remove. These were some of the miscellaneous tips for pearl care.

Luster of pearls

Pearl jewelry is famous for its natural beauty and brilliance. Luster is the hallmark of any pearls. Intense and deep shine of pearls are called luster.

This brilliance of pearl is created when light reflects from the layers of nacre. Nacre is the actual substance forming pearls. It is made up of tiny crystals of calcium carbonate crystals. Since luster of pearl is light phenomenon, while judging the pearl luster quality and quantity of light must be taken into account.

The luster of pearls depends upon the quality of nacre. Transparency, smoothness and thickness of each microscopic layers of nacre determine the quality of nacre. While judging luster of pearls, examine the pearls in a flat white surface. Examine pearl directly under light. while examining luster of pearl; look at the light reflections on the pearls, it must be sharp and intense. Contrast edges of brightest and darkest areas of the pearl must be clear.

According to GIA; pearls with excellent luster has bright, distinct and sharp light reflections. Pearls with good luster have bright reflections but they are not sharp and slightly cloudy around the edges. Pearls with weak, cloudy and blurred reflection are said to have fair luster and pearl with poor luster reflect dim and diffused light. Pearl with low or poor luster appears chalky, rather than brilliant and shiny.

The thicker the nacre, the more lustrous is the pearl. The amount of nacre determines the reflective quality of the pearls. it is important to have unblemished pearl surface, because luster is often seen on a smooth surface without ridges that could deflect the light. Pearls with high luster are valued more. Keshi pearls are exception for that, these pearls are completely composed of nacre, they are most lustrous of all other pearls, yet they are very less expensive than other pearls.
