Grading of pearls
Grading of pearls is a very important step in the process of pearl formation and development. Before the pearls are supplied to the wholesalers, jewelers or the store owners all around the world, it has to be graded to ensure its quality and the intelligent selection by the customers. Grading of pearls takes place in four categories: grade A, grade AA, grade AAA and grade AAAA.
Grade A- the pearls in this category are beautiful and lustrous ones having a semi round shape. They may have some markings or imperfections on their surface areas and also have small spots. The grade A pearls are admired for their very high natural luster.
Grade AA- these pearls are round in shape and are very lustrous. It has a clean surface area without any imperfections. These pearls are of great value because their cost is low and the quality is similar to that of high grade pearls.
Grade AAA- the pearls falling under this category are generally round in shape having excellent bluster. The surface area is very clean without any significant visible markings or imperfections. These are the pearls of high quality having high luster that can also be purchased on loose strands.
Grade AAAA- the main difference between the grade AAA and grade AAAA is in its roundness. This is the highest grade for the freshwater pearls and is very rare. Thus, they are used only to make pendants or rings. The grade AAAA pearls have a very high luster and sparkle and an excellent round shape. The surface area is very clean and you will not notice any spots, surface markings or imperfections in the pearl.
When you are shopping for pearls, look clearly that they fall in which grade. Without defining the grades properly, you will not be aware about the quality of the pearls that you are purchasing.
