Formation of pearls

Pearl, one of the extra-ordinary and a beautiful gem stone is loved by all the women. It beautifies them on any occasion or ceremony. So, you will also be surely interested to know how real pearls are made. Let us see in brief, the formation of the pearls.

Pearl is found inside a living animal, an oyster. The pearl is formed due to a biological process- the oyster’s style of preventing himself from the foreign substances. The formation of a natural pearl is accidental. That means, when an accidental intruder enters the shell of a mollusk, the natural pearl is formed. To defend itself, it forms a layer of substances around itself and ultimately forms like the skin of a onion around the particle. These layers are semi-opaque that contains calcium carbonate and it makes up the pearl. Generally, the shape of the natural pearls is different from one another. This is so because the formation of the pearls entirely depends upon the shape of the piece that is coated by nature. Nowadays, it is very rare as well as expensive.

Hence, man has developed a process for imitating the process of the formation of natural pearls. This process is termed as cultured pearls. Generally these cultured pearls are available in sized like millimeters. The cultured pearls, similarly like the natural pearls grow and develop in the mollusk. The only difference is in natural pearls, the process goes on naturally; whereas in the cultured pearls the growth takes place with the human intervention.

The human beings then open the shells carefully and then insert different shapes of beads into it. After a due course of time, the beads get coated with nacre. This coating makes the pearl glow and shine inside the shell. Thus, we get to see the beautiful, shiny pearl.
