Since pearls are organic gemstone, it is very sensitive to harsh chemicals. Such chemicals are often present in perfumes, hair spray, body lotions and other cosmetics. This will help you to avoid sprays and creams touching the surface of pearls.
Never expose pearl jewelry to chlorine, ammonia and vinegar, they can ruin luster of pearls. Keep pearl jewelry away from flame or heat, higher temperature can cause discoloration of pearls. Surface of pearls are very soft, it can easily get scratched or damaged. To avoid scratching never wear other hard metal jewelry along with pearl jewelry. Even do not store the pearl jewelry with other jewelry. Some rough fabric like Shetland wool can scratch the pearl surface, so try to avoid wearing pearl jewelry with those fabrics.
After wearing the pearl jewelry, it should be clean and dry before storing it. For cleaning pearls always use mild soap or ammonia-free cleansers. Wipe pearls with soft cloth. After cleaning pearls, store pearls separately. Pouches of smooth cloth or jewelry container with soft container are ideal for storage of pearl jewelry.
Check pearl strand for any signs of wear before every time you use. If require restrung it. It is advisable to have knots between each pearl in strand; this will keep them away from scratching. By taking proper care of pearl jewelry, you can cherish beauty of pearls for many generations.
