Among different beaded jewelry, coral jewelry is one of the brightest and most beautiful. Coral jewelry is very delicate to make requires a lot of patience. However, these coral is delicate but hard material to work with.

Coral beads used for making jewelry only the corals obtained from ‘Corallium rubrum’ and ‘Corallium japonicam’ are used. in earl years corals were extracted from underwater reefs with dragnets, but now because of environmental worries divers collect corals.

Red coral is preferred for making jewelry. This coral grows upon the deep rocky bottom in very dark environment. The red coral is skeleton made up of calcium carbonate. This is often polished to a fine glossy shine with flowing range of warm pink to the darker reddish color tones.

Black coral is very rare and expensive. This coral is excellent for carving and shaping. Black coral has one unique quality, it bends when it is warmed. Sometimes black color of the coral is thought to be a early sign of decomposition.

Blue coral is called as Akori or Allopora subviolacea. Theses remarkable gorgeous corals are found only off the coastline of Cameroon. Just like black coral golden corals are also exotic. They are found off the coastline of Maui, Hawaii. This golden coral has a glossy surface.

Apart from these naturally formed corals, there is one more type of coral, reconstituted corals. Coral fragments are pulverized into powder, soaked in binding agents and then it is pressed into solid mass. It is then cut into desired shape and size.

Usually coral jewelry is made up of coral beads. These coral beads are available in many different shapes like classic round, hexagon, peanut, rice, tube, heart and many more. All these coral beads are available in various sizes; you can have coral beads of size as small as 2mm or big 8mm beads.
