Natural pearls are very rare and expensive; this is the reason why today you will find them in antiques only. Pearl culturing has now become standard production all across the world. There are number of varieties from different location with different prices depending upon the kind of environment required for pearl growth. According to all the above aspects pearls are classified as Akoya pearls, south sea pearls, Tahitian pearls and freshwater pearls.

Akoya pearls:

Akoya pearls are perfect for the classic jewelry, they are round, white lustrous with pink overtones, ladylike and demure. They are considered as the most finest and popular in the world because of their marvelous appearance. They are named after the Japanese word for comparatively small pictanda fucata oyster. Usually akoya are cultured in saltwater oysters in the cold waters of the islands of Japan, these oysters are nucleated with minimum five beads varying from 2mm to 6mm in diameter. Akoya pearls are consistently round, and they are bleached to perfect whiteness which you will hardly found in other pearl types.

South sea pearls:

South sea pearls are one of the excellent pearl types and are available in silver to white, cream and golden colors. There size is much larger as compare to average pearls that range from 8mm up to 22mm size and if it is bulk production then size ranges from 10mm to 14mm. these are rarest and exceptional pearls you will find in traditional jewelry his is because of their perfect roundness and smoothness.

Tahitian pearls:

Tahitian pearls are known after they found on the island of Tahiti but now they are farmed at other places like south pacific and Cook Islands etc. these are larger than akoya pearls just because they are farmed in large oyster there diameter changes from 7mm to 20mm. with a bulk of production between 10mm to 14mm. Tahitian pearls add a dramatic touch to your fashion or designer jewelry. Their natural color comes from oysters black lips but their original color ranges from metallic silver, to the color of black.

Freshwater pearls:

Freshwater pearls are best suited as a gift as they are available in all accessories at the same time they are fairly reasonable as compare to other pearl types. Other than rice shaped freshwater pearl they are round and ranges from 6mm to 8mm, sometimes they resemble with akoya pearls in appearance.
