Anyway, that aside, here's something I'd like to show you guys! I've been thinking of ways to improve the 'Past Collections' section of the website and make it look less drabby, so look what miracles new technology, thanks to Photobucket, can do for me!

Also, because I'm feeling decidedly happy, I shall let you guys in on a secret sneak peek of a bracelet I customized for a friend recently. This sneak peek's not actually of the real thing (where's the fun in that?) but the lovely beads and crystals I bought for making it.

Imitation pearls are not genuine pearls. There are two different categories of imitation pearls; one type of imitation pearls are made up of glass and it is then glazed with a substance called essence of orient. Now how to detect these imitation pearls; first and foremost thing to check is shape of pearls. You just can’t get a pearl string with all real pearls of similar shape and size, every natural pearl has its own shape and size. Imitation pearl strings usually have pearls that have identical shape and size. Texture of imitation pearls shows some kind of stickiness.

While detecting real pearls from Fake pearls made up from shell, check out stripes on surface of pearls. If stripes present on surface are parallel with each other, then these pearls are imitation pearls. If pearl has rippled trail reflecting spectacular iridescent then that pearl is definitely a real pearl.

You can even go for some tests to detect between real pearls and imitation pearls. First test is tooth test, just rub the pearl across teeth; fake pearls will feel smooth. You can examine the pearl surface with magnifying glass; real pearls always have fine-grained structure.

To restore their natural luster, dip those pearls in very dilute solution of hydrochloric acid, outermost nacre layer present on pearl necklace will dissolve in acid solution and new layer comes on the surface. This way you can restore the natural luster of pearls.

While looking through some beading books recently, I picked up a very useful tip: how to make a wire jig- see picture on left. For those who bead, you'll know what I'm talking about: it basically involves a rather simple yet complicated way of using round nosed pliers to make these crazy little loops with wire.

After a few hours, lots of broken bits of wire and ugly red blisters, I finally managed to complete a wire jig creation that I was proud to call my own:

Mystical jade has its own charm and beautiful translucent appearance. Just like all other gemstones Jade is also available in different types. Factors which determine type of jade are tone, color, translucency, clarity, texture and cutting.

Tone and Color: this is very specific quality of color grade and finest colored jade has penetrating and vivid color. Color of jade should be evenly distributed.
Translucency and clarity: jade is available from transparent to opaque.
Texture: texture of jade can be coarse to fine; clear jade is graded as highest quality Jade.
Cutting: How the shaping is done. All these factors collectively determine the type of jade.

Jade is basically classified into four different types.
“A” type or natural jade: this type of jade undergoes the traditional processing like plum juice washing; this process is done for polishing marks and then it is soaked in wax. This process is recognized as standard practice. Because of its natural color Type A jade is also referred as jade with “True color”.

‘B’ type Jade: this type of jade is chemically bleached; this bleaching process removes impurities and it is some polymers are impregnated which enhances the translucency. Structure integrity of the jade is disturbed by this treatment.

Type ‘C’ jade: this type of jade is dyed to improved coloration; at the beginning color of this jade will be brilliant and rich but as time passes it undergoes discoloration.

Type ‘B+C’ jade: when polymer is impregnated in jade it is also dyed artificially. Color of this type of jade does not disappear as time passes.

Type A jade is precious and very expensive because of its translucency, even coloration and smooth surface. Imperial jade and emerald green colored jade from Myanmar are considered to be most valuable jades. Along with emerald green color; jade can be appear in mottled green and white color; yellow, purple, pink and black colored jade is very rare. The range of green is light green to dark green. Color of jade is most important criteria which determine type of jade. On Moh’s scale of hardness Jade is a 6 ½-7.

Let’s start with simple chain pearl bracelet. For making this pearl bracelet you will require silver chain (Length of chain depends upon size of bracelet, 7 inches is standard length for bracelets). Then one silver clasps, 2 jump rings, around 12 headpins, then 12-13 freshwater pearls of any color of your choice and tools required for making this bracelets are wire cutter, flat nosed pliers and round nose pliers.

Now first, with help of jump ring attach silver chain to clasp. While attaching this jump ring, attach it at an half an inch from other end of chain. After that with help of nose pliers attach one headpin to each freshwater pearl; then just attach those pearls to the silver chain at some specific interval you can attach them on alternate side of silver chain. For attaching pearl to the chain just lift up loop of headpin, hook it to the chain and pull it down to close loop securely. Attach the last pearl to the end of the chain, so that whenever you will wear this bracelet, there will be short half inch of remaining chain dangling with a pearl at end. This is very simple pearl bracelet design. Now let’s look at more complex bracelet design.

We are making this necklace with coin pearl and crystal beads. For making this pearl bracelet, we will require one toggle clasps, around 6-8 coin pearls, around 15 inches of soft metal wire.

Firstly make one wrapped loop of soft wire and insert pearl into wire and push it up against the wrapped loop. Now make another wrapped loop on anther side of pearl and bring wire across one side of pearl and wrap it around first pearl, repeat this for another side of pearl, like this wire wrap all coin pearls you have. Attach two wire wrap pearls with crystal beads. On one side of bracelet you will have wrapped loop of coin pearl, now at other end of pearl attach toggle claps and on other part of chain add counter part of toggle clasp. And your bracelet is ready.

I will be taking preorders for a very new addition to the shop- rings! I have made 1 so far, and am obviously very satisfied with it, so I am now taking pre-orders of this ring as my supply of beads and raw materials for ring-making is very limited.

So, long story short- this is the photo of it. Yay!

I am also most certainly open to customizations- to those of you who adore big beaded chunky rings like this but hate pink, email me back stating what colour tone you'd like the ring changed to, and I'll see if I can do it for you. (I am open to quite almost everything, as long it's not too ridiculous like fluorescent green or something) Might I also casually add that this will make the perfect New Year's pressie.

Important: Because of tight time constraints, this ring preorder closes on the 30th of December 2007, which is in 4 days' time. Orders later than that might not be able to be processed due to limited ring-making materials, as previously explained.

Every gemstone has some specific system by which it is differentiated into different grades. Just like 4 C’s of diamond grading system pearl also has its own grading system depending on different factors. The grading of pearls is basically depends upon size, shape, color, luster, surface quality and nacre quality. All these factors collectively affect overall quality, rarity and beauty of pearl.

From all these six factors, size of pearl play the most important role in evaluating pearls. Pearl industry does not have a universal grading system; there are two major grading systems which are widely used; the AAA to A grading system and A to D grading system. A to D system is special grading system used for evaluating only Tahitian pearls.

The AAA-A grading system

This system is usually used for grading freshwater pearls and akoya pearls; many dealers use this system also to evaluate South sea pearls. In this system pearls are graded from AAA to A. AAA is highest grade for pearls.
AAA- pearl with this grade is virtually the flawless, with very high luster and almost 95-96% of pearl surface will be free from surface blemishes.
AA- pearl with “AA” grading will have very high luster and almost 80% for pearl surface will be free from any type of blemishes.
A-This is lowest grade in this pearl grading system; pearls with this grade will have low surface luster and almost more than 30% of pearl surface will show some kind of surface blemishes.

The A-D grading system (Tahitian grading system)

This pearl grading system is exclusively for Tahitian pearls and sometimes South Sea pearls; so the name Tahitian system. This system pearls are graded on scale from A to D.
This system is used in only countries which produce these pearls.
- Pearl with A grade is highest quality pearl with very high luster and very minor surface imperfections; almost the perfect Black pearl.
- Pearl with B grade may have high or medium luster; pearl surface may have some blemishes.
- Pearl will have medium luster and more visible surface blemishes.
- Pearls with this grade have very low luster and over 60% of pearl surface may have visible surface blemishes.

Pearl is an organic gem made up of calcium carbonate, pearl require more specialized care than other gems. They are specifically subject to declining of their surface from contact with chemicals including components in household cleaners, perfumes, cosmetics and all other chemical products.

Most important thing about pearl care is that never expose your pearls to any kind of chemicals including your perfume or body spray, cosmetics and hair sprays. Always wear your pearl jewelry after make up, when you are just about to leave. These harsh chemicals can damages your pearls

Pearl surface is very soft and can easily be damaged. Pearls suffer more from scuffing or friction when they are to be studded into the brooches, earrings, necklaces or strands.

Precautions to maintain the blaze of pearl:

- Pearl ring or bracelet should be considered as special occasion jewelry and not to be worn daily.
- Never apply perfume or hairspray when you are wearing pearl jewelry and especially a strand of pearls.
- Pearl strand should be stock up separately from others because its surface is very delicate and soft.
- Never store pearls in plastic bag. Sometimes plastic emits a chemical that may deteriorate its surface.
- Don’t keep them with paper documents or after some period these documents will dry out the pearl.
- Pearl strand should be stored straight in the box instead of hanging it so that the string won’t get stretched.
- Clean it up with mild soap and natural bristle brush after that rinse it with cold water for 5 minutes.
- Don’t use detergents, any household cleaner, commercial jewelry cleaners or tarnish removers on pearl jewelry.
- Never use pearl cleaning brush for any other purpose keeps it well after use. Something that will summaries all these do’s and don’ts, is pearl should be ”The Last Thing You Put On” while dressing and “The First Thing You Take off” when you return home.

Pearls are perfect for any occasion; apart from their elegance and classic look pearls have one more unique characteristic they are simply versatile. You can combine them with almost any kind of gemstones, metal beads or silver beads or almost anything and everything; pearls just look gorgeous with anything. Apart from looking gorgeous look elegance comes with pearls that just enhance the beauty of other material.

Let’s make bracelet and earrings set with some freshwater pearls, some crystal beads and link connectors which are available in many different shapes like flowers, leaves or heart a many more. This linker looks very beautiful in between gorgeous radiating pearls. Along with those crystal beads, linker and freshwater pearls; we will require lever back findings for earrings, jump rings, head pins, eye pins, lobster clasps. For making this pearl jewelry, tools required are flat chain nose pliers, round nose pliers and side cutter.

Let’s start with bracelet; take three eye pins and place one pearl on it, cut off excess eye pin using side cutter. Bend the remaining wire use flat nose pliers and make a loop; don’t close loop tightly. Loop must be on same side as that of loop on eye pin. Same as above now place three crystal beads on three eye pins. Now place loop of flower link into loosely closed loop of pearl eye pin and then close the loop tightly. Repeat this procedure alternately for pearl and crystal beads; link all pearls and crystal with help of flower shaped linker. Open one jump ring and place it into the loop of last linker on both sides and now add lobster clasps at both ends, twist the jump ring to close. This way your bracelet is ready.

Now for making earrings; on each of head pins place pearl, linker and crystal bead same as we did for bracelet just instead of adding lobster clasps at end you have to add ear pin at each end; you can have length of earrings as much you like; just keep on adding pearl, crystal bead and linker in specific order.

By just combining pearls with some other gemstone beads or some gemstone chips you can easily create some simple but beautiful Pearl earrings. To start with let’s make very simple dangle pearl and crystal bead earrings.

For making this earrings you will require 2 ear hooks, 2 freshwater pearls, 2 pieces of one inch chain then some crystal beads, then two eye pins and two head pins. Begin the task with making beaded link with freshwater pearls. Then make 2 beaded drops with seed pearls, now just attach beaded link to one end of the chain, to another end of chain attach the beaded drop, this will create a dangle. After this, attach dangle to the ear hook. Repeat this procedure for other earring. That’s it! Your dangle pearl earrings are ready to wear.

If you are looking for something more fashionable or much trendier but easy to make then here is the solution; you can easily make fashionable turquoise and pearl earrings. Let’s start with the bracelet, first take jewelry wire which is around 9-10 inches in length. Attach its one end to one part of hook; use crimp tubes to this. Then using crimping tool secures the clasp.
