Detecting real pearls from imitation pearls

Pearl jewelry is the most elegant piece of jewelry any woman can wear; these gorgeous gemstones are classic, elegant adornment that never goes out of fashion. If you thinking of buying some pearl jewelry or loose pearls then it is very important to know the difference between real pearls and faux or imitation pearls. To detect the difference between real and imitation pearls all you need is a sharp observation and little information about pearls.

Imitation pearls are not genuine pearls. There are two different categories of imitation pearls; one type of imitation pearls are made up of glass and it is then glazed with a substance called essence of orient. Second type of imitation pearls, are pearls which are made up of shells of mollusk or oysters; these pearls are similar shape and luster as that of real pearls.

Now how to detect these imitation pearls; first and foremost thing to check is shape of pearls. You just can’t get a pearl string with all real pearls of similar shape and size, every natural pearl has its own shape and size. Imitation pearl strings usually have pearls that have identical shape and size. Texture of imitation pearls shows some kind of stickiness.

While detecting real pearls from Fake pearls made up from shell, check out stripes on surface of pearls. If stripes present on surface are parallel with each other, then these pearls are imitation pearls. If pearl has rippled trail reflecting spectacular iridescent then that pearl is definitely a real pearl.

You can even go for some tests to detect between real pearls and imitation pearls. First test is tooth test, just rub the pearl across teeth; fake pearls will feel smooth. You can examine the pearl surface with magnifying glass; real pearls always have fine-grained structure.
