Pearls are only organic gem, which is formed within animals. Pearls are cultivated within shell of oyster or in case of freshwater pearls inside body of mollusk. The nacre, which is lustrous coating of the pearl that gives pearls its radiant glow. Unlike any other gemstones, pearls are very soft so it is necessary to take good care of them.
You can say pearl jewelry is allergic to chemicals, all your hairsprays, perfumes and lotions can damage the luster of pearls. Therefore, when you are dressing up, pearl jewelry must be last item you put on. In this way, you can limit exposure of pearl jewelry to chemicals and prolong life of your gorgeous pearls.
Pearl jewelry can become dirty over time. You can gently clean your pearl jewelry yourself with very slightly damp soft cloth. Avoid use of any kind of scrubbers or rough cloth. Never use soap or detergents to clean pearls. After cleaning your pearls, spread your pearls on clean and dry cloth.
If you wear pearl necklace very regularly, then it advisable to replace silk string every two or three years. Restrung ensures that your pearl strand won’t break and you won’t loose your precious pearls.
After some years, pearls may loose their natural luster and may appear yellow. To restore their natural luster, dip those pearls in very dilute solution of hydrochloric acid, outermost nacre layer present on pearl necklace will dissolve in acid solution and new layer comes on the surface. This way you can restore the natural luster of pearls.
