Mother-of- Pearl
Mother of pearl is the internal layer of the mollusk shell also known as the nacre. This is the same substance which is deposited around the nucleus, or irritant, inserted inside the oyster. Actually it is a protecting coating of oyster to protect their body from parasites and foreign objects. Mother of pearls have a remarkable strength due to many nano layers of organic substance.
There are many types of mother of pearls. White Mother of Pearls are most commonly used and have a highly reflective surface. Some Mother of Pearls have iridescent pink and green colors which are commonly available. Natural mother of pearls can be artificially tinted with any color. They can also be cut into artistic shapes and can be laminated on ceramic tiles.
Due to its remarkable strength, mother of pearls are widely used in many art forms. Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, anklets, and even key chains made up of mother pearls are available in the retail market with many different designs. Due to its toughness it can be given many shapes which is impossible for other gemstones.
